REAMPING A GUITAR
In this blog I intend to share my experience in learning how to reamp a guitar. This trimester we learned how to, and about the benefits of reamping a guitar.
There are a few reasons why we use this technique in the studios, for example, we can use a recorded piece, like a guitar loop or solo and by reamping it,
There are a few reasons why we use this technique in the studios, for example, we can use a recorded piece, like a guitar loop or solo and by reamping it,
we can achieve different tones on different amps and processors that can be rerecorded with a mic/different mics of your choice.
This also helps for when you got that perfect take and you just want a different tone on it. Moreover, booking a musician can be expensive and by using this technique,
you can record the musician in one day, and play around with the recording on different equipment for days in your own time to get the perfect sound you're looking for.
The process of reamping begins with a reamp box, which does the opposite of di box, i.e. it reduces the signal strength and impedance, in order to facilitate it being played through an amplifier,
which is used to an input from a low strength electric guitar. The input into the reamp box will be the recorded signal, and the output from it will go to the amplifier.
The amplifier can then be recorded with different mics of your taste and using different mic-ing techniques. It’s the perfect replacement of having to have an artist playing in the studio.
Few things to watch out for, troubles which we had faced first hand, is to make sure the output sent to the reampbox/amp does not contain the microphone signals from the recording room as well as the talkback mics from the studio which will cause the feedback loop. You should only be listening to the pre recorded version in the recorded room, through the amp; and the mic-ed up amp in the monitoring room. Good luck trying this technique and I hope this explanation helps!
